I've no spoilers of Familiar Magic in this review but if you haven't read Underground Magic, the series' excellent prequel, stop right here and go read that. You can get it from the author for free and it's worth the read. Warning though: by necessity this review is a major spoiler of Underground Magic.This book started off with a gut punch. I'd read Underground Magic and was really looking forward to seeing further interactions between Kala, Trin, & Feal, the three most powerful witches of London, and their newly created familiar Stella Familiar (yes, I've said this before: gotta love that name). Then on page 1 of this book (so not really a spoiler of this book) all three of the witches are found murdered! Humph. (I'd still recommend Underground Magic though as it's s well written back story and great as a stave-alone novel.)
It's really fun following Stella in action as she gets revenge on what killed her creator (see, I'm being careful here: no spoiler-ish hints about what that is). A mystery and a thriller, full of magic and adventure in a really wonderfully thought out plot. An extraordinarily well drawn lead, supported by a wonderful cast of supporting characters and, yes, a final resolution that's fully satisfying while still leaving me salivating for the next book. This was pure fun and highly recommended.

A crime to end all crimes committed against the London Coven. A great who done it and who is going to pay for it. An enjoyable read with many tales in between.
Love this whole series so far. They are short but great. Stella is a great protagonist. Flawed , but fun. I also like the detective, David, . These books are fast paced, impossible to put down, funny(Great sense of humor). I bought all 3 and they are all great. Keep them coming.
The story moved at a fast pace and kept me interested. The action was violent and gruesome, but it was not too disgusting. The main characters were not too shallow, but the remaining cast were definitely background material. The battles were intense. All in all the book was engaging.
Great story and characters. Need to learn more about David and others. The ending was a bit of a disappointment in that it seemed to come too easily and too quickly. Also, many proofing mistakes which were irritating.
Well, I didn't love it but I definitely didn't hate it either. It's an interesting insight to the Uncanny Kingdom from Stella's point of view - the Familiar to witches. I think I might grow to like her, eventually, but I was hoping that I'd immediately love her (as I did with Jake Fletcher as the protagonist in the Ghost series - also part of the Uncanny Kingdom)
Nevertheless, good writing and an original premise.
It is difficult when the one at the bottom of the org chart is the only one left after a disaster. It could hardly be worse than when the powerful London Coven is the org, and you are their Familiar, a relative pawn. the author takes this unnerving scenario and shows how a Familiar was able to accomplish a creditable turnaround with guts, skill, centuries of experience (!) and assistance from weird and wonderful sources, plus friends. You've got to read it.
The London Coven is made up of the three most powerful witches in the city who have been charged with policing the denizens of the Uncanny Kingdom - the hidden magical world in this series' universe - and to help keep most humans unaware of its existence. They've been doing their job for a few hundred years, but as the story opens, Stella Familiar, a humanoid woman the Coven had created to assist them in their work, comes home to find them dead. Stella quickly begins trying to find out what killed her witches and avenge their deaths.
Aside from a short prequel story I haven't yet read, "Familiar Magic" is the first book in publisher Genre Reader's London Coven series, one of at least three series they have that are set in their multi-author Uncanny Kingdom universe. It's full of action, snarky humor, interesting people and lots of magic. It's a face-paced tale that still manages to work in some strong world-building and good character development.
Stella makes for an intriguing heroine. She was conjured up, fully grown, by her masters, and she never ages, but even though she was created for a specific purpose, she's not just a puppet or living automaton. She has a full range of emotions, is smart and witty, has strengths and vulnerabilities and is able to determine her own path, be it what she needs to do in the moment or what plan she had for her own future.
She gets teamed up with Detective David Tyler, who until Stella entered his life knew nothing about the magical world existing along-side the human one. And while he may get flustered when confronted with yet some other new thing or experience, he has an almost unrelenting positive attitude and does his best to just roll with it. Together, Stella and David make for a formidable (and entertaining) team.
This was one of those books I had a hard time putting down once I picked it up. It's a promising start to what I'm hoping will be a really fun series.
